Outside of returning shonen anime such as Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc, My Dress-Up Darling received the most attention from all of the Winter 2022 releases. Based on Shinichi Fukuda's beloved manga, Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru is a romance that also dives wholeheartedly into cosplay, a topic that precious few anime have explored beyond introducing it as a side character's passion.

Part of the Spring 2022 anime season, Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie received quite a bit of hype prior to its debut, inciting murmurs that it could be the show that fills in the void left by My Dress-Up Darling. First things first, do not approach Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san expecting it to be exactly like Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru as they are quite different types of shows.

My Dress-up Darling is not just a romance anime, as it is also a slice of life. Working!! delivers a similar mix, just with the focus being on a family restaurant rather than the cosplay scene. Split into multiple seasons, the romance aspect grows more pronounced as the anime progresses, with a number of relationships being explored.

Both anime revolve around students coming together over a common cause, be it cosplay in My Dress-up Darling or the Volunteer Service Club in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. More importantly, these anime take generic romance tropes and make them feel fresh, albeit in quite different ways. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU's later seasons dive deep into their characters' personalities, delivering introspective analysis of their anxieties, fears, and dreams.

Ai Yazawa's popular Paradise Kiss was adapted into a too-short anime by Madhouse, and while the show does not capture the brilliance of the Josei manga, it is still a solid watch. Paradise Kiss revolves around the fashion industry and follows Yukari Hayasaka, a frustrated student overwhelmed by her mother's expectations, as she is dragged into the modeling world after being discovered on the street.

ReLIFE is initially a slice of life that explores Arata Kaizaki's struggles to reintegrate into school, both academically and socially. While romance is not a significant factor, the anime does explore this avenue in its final few episodes and the ReLIFE: Kanketsu-hen special series.

A history of bullying has forced Mei Tachibana to close off from the world as a form of self-protection, a decision that led her to have no friends. After a "meet cute" with the school's resident heartthrob, Yamato, Mei's life begins to change. Say "I Love You" has a considerably weaker start than My Dress-up Darling as it does not justify Yamato's interest in Mei; however, once the characters get together, the anime improves considerably.

Although revolving exclusively around couples, Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku is more of a comedy than a pure romance. That said, the anime has its share of heart-pounding scenes that should satisfy romantics. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku also handles its romance realistically, as while Narumi and Hirotaka gradually grow closer, their relationship is naturally slow-moving.

A timid girl who unfortunately looks like the ghost from Ringu, Sawako Kuronuma has led a high school life defined by loneliness and anxiety. On the other hand, Shouta Kazehaya is the guy every girl wants to be with; naturally, the two start to get close, a camaraderie that inspires Sawako to open up.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You is arguably the standard-bearer for anime about an outcast and popular student falling in love, especially when it comes to shoujo. While the show does resist making Sawako and Shouta an official couple for far too long, their friendship is still heartwarming.

Marin is a tall, young girl with long hair that has a gradient from blonde to soft pink. her forehead is covered by part of her bangs and reach down to her eyelashes. Two small locks of her hair extend down past her shoulders in her front. She has straight hair in the manga which eventually becomes curly. She has multiple silver/white ear piercings all over both of her ears.

She has a black detached fabric collar hooked with a tie and a black leather choker clasped on top of it. Attached to the choker is metal ring, with a black leash chain extended from that. The bodice of the dress has frills along the front seams as well as an interlacing corset pattern made with rope, tied into a bow in the middle. There are three differently colored layers of fabric on the skirt of the dress, underneath such being a crinoline to make the dress look beautiful and full. The top skirt layer has the same rose embroidered pattern as the cap, and has frills at the end. The second layer underneath the first is simple and is the same black fabric as the sleeves and bodice of the dress. Lastly she has her frilly white crinoline. Her socks have lacy black rose embroidering and are connected to a garter belt on her waist. The number 17 is written directly below her underwear on her thighs. She wears black platform heels.

Another outfit consists of a simple, low-cut, black dress. The dress crops to below her hips, and the sleeves of the dress are shoulder-less and flare out at her forearms, covering her hands. She wears a fake black fabric button-up collar on her neck as a choker. Her hair and makeup is normal, and she has short black socks with gray and black shoes.

There's a lot to be said for the power of creative freedom, and the anime and manga industry is often lauded for producing content that's not only original and innovative but also inspiring and empowering. However, seemingly just as often, anime and manga is criticized for falling back on stale tropes and unsavory, potentially harmful conventions, especially when it comes to themes of gender and sexuality.

When it comes to seinen titles -- that is, Japanese manga that are originally published in magazines specifically marketed toward adult men -- one trope in particular is disturbingly common: stories that feature girls and young teenage women who are openly and heavily sexualized. Not all of these stories are obscure oddities or even non-conformist cult favorites, either; plenty are popular and mainstream works that have received full televised anime adaptations, and which have gone on to win the hearts of audiences both in Japan and worldwide.

Just like any other anime and manga demographic, there's an incredible amount of variety to be had among seinen titles in terms of genre, theme and style. For example, franchises like the incredibly violent dark fantasy Berserk are obviously very different from slice-of-life iyashikei series such as Non Non Biyori, yet both of these are seinen titles simply because their respective manga were published in seinen magazines. Not every seinen work therefore happens to feature young women or girls as main characters at all, and of those that do, not all of those are fanservice-laden or contain any explicit content.
